Peugeot Partner Combi

Peugeot Partner Combi
However, the load-lugger it's based on is a surprisingly entertaining drive, the Partner Combi sharing its cosseting ride and sharp handling characteristics of the rest of the Peugeot range. But while the engine range used to be quite comprehensive, rationalisation sees just a single unit now features. Luckily, it's the excellent 1.6-litre HDi, with decent power and lots of torque to provide good performance and a willing nature. It's also very economical, averaging over 50mpg, and has a sweet, revvy nature. An immensely practical, spacious and even enjoyable family vehicle then? Yes, but there's a catch; the equivalent Citroen is cheaper, and as it's no different to drive it's the better choice.
Peugeot 807

Peugeot 807
There are a range of 2.0-litre and 2.2-litre petrol and diesel engines. Of them it's the range topping 2.2-litre HDI that makes the most sense. The similarly sized petrol might offer slightly more refinement, but the additional torque and better consumption figures for the 2.2-litre HDI make it easily the best choice. The smaller engines struggle to cope with the weight of the big MPV. The suspension soaks up bumps and crests with ease, while wind and road noise is kept to a minimum - making the 807 a relaxed long-distance machine. The dash-mounted gearshift is rather rubbery in action and the steering isn't the most responsive - but overall the driving experience is up there with the class leaders. Well specified, spacious and smartly designed inside and out, Peugeot finally has a full-sized MPV take on the best of the competition.
Peugeot 607

Peugeot 607
This stylish foray into the executive car market from Peugeot has been beset with all sorts of problems from the start. Pre-production test cars were beset with handling problems, something that has since been sorted though it has done little to warm the introduction of the large Peugeot into this competitive market segment.

Despite this the 607 is not a bad attempt at the executive car genre, with loads of space and a suitably luxurious cabin. Standard specification is high, as it needs to be to tempt buyers away from traditional executive brands, and the pricing is keen. The styling is certainly eye-catching and neat touches and attention to detail like the boot release button in the model badge make it feel special. Refinement too is good from all engines in a range that includes a 2.2-litre petrol, a 2.2-litre HDi and a 3.0-litre V6. The cabin is whisper quiet with double glazing keeping the noise out. Realistic pricing and individuality are likely to win it buyers, though many will still prefer the kudos of a German marque rather than the Lion from Peugeot.
Peugeot 407

Peugeot 407
The model blends the company's 2.2-litre HDi 170 diesel engine with a number of exterior additions. These include front bumper spoilers, a tailgate spoiler, sports mesh front grille, twin sports exhaust pipes and 18-inch alloy wheels. Top speed is 137mph, 0-62mph is nine seconds and the extra urban fuel cycle returns 55.3mpg.
Peugeot 307

Peugeot 307
A smooth ride characterises the 307. It soaks up bumps with composure and has a long-legged, soothing feel at speed. Handling is OK but the car's strange MPV-like cabin makes it hard to place with accuracy; it feels bigger than it is, though there is talent there if you concentrate. Petrol engines are quiet unless they're worked hard, which they need to be; diesels cost more but are faster in real-world conditions. The 180bhp 2.0-litre sounds like a fun range-topper but it's not, demanding unrealistic revs and suffering a torque deficit.

The 307 feels well-built, with quality detailing and plush trims. The biggest gripe will be rear passenger's comfort. The 307 has an almost unacceptable lack of rear legroom once the driver has found a comfortable seating position. It's reasonably well-stocked too though only upper-range models offer ESP as standard. Unusually, it hasn't been Euro-NCAP crash-tested but, more predictably, retained values are average, though the market has taken quite a fancy to SW and CC variants. Service intervals are lengthy and insurance notably low, though fuel economy of 1.6-litre petrol models is off the pace. The diesels, naturally, are excellent.
Peugeot 206

Peugeot 206
The 206 is a traditional French hatchback; lolloping suspension gives a laid-back ride and pointy, involving handling - but noise suppression isn't the greatest. Add in the 206's vocal engines and high-speed wind rush, and you've a noisy companion at speed. The steering is also a little loose and the tail will ease out if you're snappy with the throttle in the wet. At least relative light weight means 1.4-litre engines offer decent shove, while 1.6-litre Sport versions are great warm hatches. But to drive the 206, you must put up with an appalling driving position - cramped pedals and distant, angled steering wheel - while non-sport seats aren't brilliant either. Throw in a distinct lack of space, particularly in the rear, and you've a car that is certainly feeling its age. Even before you've considered the hard, scratchy dash plastics and evidence of rattles.

206s have long been massively popular with private buyers, keeping retained values high. This should continue as Peugeot cleverly manages the range now the 207 has arrived. Economy isn't bad for an 'oldie' (the newer 1.4-litre engine returns better mpg than the 1.1-litre) and long service intervals help keep annual costs down. But insurance ratings could be lower and mid-'90s design means it can't shrug off parking scrapes as cheaply as more modern designs.

Go-faster stripes have been around for decades, but they are still a favourite with French car makers aiming to add some spice to a familiar shape.

The latest model to earn its stripes is Peugeot’s 107 Sport XS. Complete with a big snowplough-style front bumper, white wing mirrors, smart alloys and twin centre-exit exhaust pipes, it turns plenty of heads.

Inside, the new 107 gets a leather wheel plus a bright red centre console, air vents and gearlever, but the changes are only skin deep. With no extra power, the Sport XS comes with the same eager 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine and neat handling as the standard model. However, all of the range-topper’s trim changes go against the city car’s entire design and development mantra.

Made alongside the Toyota Aygo and fellow French manufacturer Citroen’s C1, every part of the Peugeot, from the one-piece glass tailgate to the rotary heater controls, has been thoughtfully designed to keep costs to a bare minimum
Peugeot 207

Peugeot 207
This is the car that Peugeot hopes will relaunch its fortunes in the hot hatch market. The new 207 GTI will have the 1.6-litre THP (Turbo High Pressure) engine that has already appeared in the new Mini Cooper S. As in the Mini, it produces 172bhp and a healthy 177lb ft of torque from 1600rpm, while in the top three gears the torque can temporarily be increased to 192lb ft thanks to an 'overboost' system.

Despite having only a five-speed manual, the 207 GTI still manages to match the six-speed Cooper S's 7.1sec 0-62mph time. Its top speed of 137mph is also on the pace.

In addition to revised spring and damper settings, the GTI will have a stiffer rear torsion beam and strengthened struts and ball joints up front. The electric power steering has also been recalibrated.

Visually, the GTI will be adorned with 17in nine-spoke 'Pitlane' alloys, a rear spoiler, twin trapezoid exhausts and satin chrome mirrors.

Impressively, considering its short wheelbase and lofty stature, the little Peugeot drives well. It's dynamically impressive, with sharp steering, lots of front-end grip and low levels of body roll. The ride is a little firm, particularly around town, but it could never be called unforgiving, even over rough roads. Stability control is fitted as standard, a real positive for Peugeot. However, it's a heavy car, so the engines have to be worked very hard; less powerful petrol units feel strained, and summon only sluggish performance. HDi diesels are better, because of their greater torque, making for a more relaxing drive. The gearlever is mounted high but the shift itself is flimsy and notchy, while the clutch is too light and has a spongy biting point.
